On Growing Up

I honestly don't spend a lot of time being sad about how fast Jack is growing up. Sure, it was sweet to cuddle him as a baby, and there are definitely parts of him being little that I miss. But really, the older Jack gets, the more fun he is, and the more I grow to love his personality, and just him in general. While I didn't possibly think I could love him any more than that first moment I got to meet him, I was so wrong. I love him more every day, and can only assume that's just going to increase more and more.

That said, Jack and I recently hit a major milestone in his life that does make me a bit sad. Just over two weeks ago, at nineteen months of age, Jack nursed for the last time. And although for the last six months or so I've complained about how ready I was for this day, and how I thought he'd "never" wean, I'd be lying if I didn't admit that I'm sad.

To me, it marks the end of babyhood, and the beginning of independent toddlerhood. He no longer relies on me, physically, for nourishment and life. He is now likely able to spend the night away from home, although I'm sure that I'm not ready for that.

Weaning was actually a pretty anti-climactic event for us, which I guess is a good thing. We were down to just once a day- before nap- for a while, and then one day he just didn't ask. Rather than offer, I decided to go with it, and believe it or not, he never asked again! I've always wanted to do self-led weaning, I just honestly never thought it would really work.

The only down side... nursing was the one thing I could ALWAYS count on to calm Jack down or make him feel better. We faced our first challenge with that this weekend and today when we discovered poor sweet Jack's fractured leg...

More on that (a lot more, I'm sure) later.

I heard you talk about the weaning on Friday....bitter sweet I'm sure! We are a long way from that over in the Clarkson household :) Hope Jack's leg starts to heal quickly....he's too cute in the cast, though!
